If the current crop of movies at your local multiplex
makes you long for the days of movie stars like Ingrid Bergman or
Cary Grant, you're in luck.
The city of Greenville is unveiling a September
series of classic films beginning tonight. If the event is a hit,
it may become a twice-annual event.
The free Moonlight Movie Series goes on for three
weeks and features two films from the 1950s, "North by Northwest"
and "On the Waterfront," and one from the 1940s, the iconic
"Casablanca."
The movies will be shown on a 10-foot screen in
the Peace Center amphitheater, with free popcorn for moviegoers.
The event was born out of a survey conducted last
year at the Reedy River Concert Series, said Rick Sizemore, special
events coordinator for the city. People who responded said they
would like to see special events in September, he said.
Last week's Outdoor Festival was the first outdoor
event that resulted, and now begins the film series. The city is
starting out with only three movies in order to "get the buzz
going" and determine whether this will be something people
will like and support, Sizemore said.
Moviegoers may bring lawn chairs, blankets and
picnics to the screenings.
If the series is successful, the city may
do films in the spring and fall of next year, he said.
