An enterprising group of Waiheke residents, Open-Air,
is bringing outdoor cinema to the Viaduct Harbour.
The 2000-seat cinema, opening in January, will
show a diverse range of classic and recent-release films. These
include Whale Rider, Pink Floyd the Wall, and classic Peter Jackson
films Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles.
Programme director Clayton Skidmore-Weir said
50 per cent of the programme content was locally made, carrying
on the recent celebration of New Zealand film.
Located on Te Wero Island, the theatre will be
handy to bars and restaurants, according to project director Urs
Bauer.
"What we are doing is not just for Aucklanders,
it's also for tourists. If it is in a special environment it is
more of an experience."
Mr Bauer said he hoped the temporary theatre would
become an annual summer fixture. "We are on a low budget, but
we think the concept is that good it will be successful."
The Auckland City Event and Film Department had
helped get the project through some tough consent processes. The
11m high screen will arrive from Germany soon and seating for 560
people has yet to be built.
